Convert new lines to commas

Paste a list with one item per line and press Join with commas. CHF, HTN, and CAD on three lines become one line: CHF, HTN, CAD. Bullets, list numbers, and blank lines are taken out for you.

My tools

Make your own buttons. A tool runs its steps in order, like removing every em dash and every $ sign, replacing & with “and”, or inserting “Dx: ” before CHF.

    My words to replace

When WriteKeys finds a word on the left, it changes it to the word on the right. Useful for words a PDF misreads the same way every time, like ESRO for ESRD.

Whole words only. Lowercase finds any capitals (esro finds ESRO and Esro). A word typed with capitals matches exactly.

No words yet. Add one above.

      Autocomplete

As you type, WriteKeys suggests words and phrases from this list. Press Tab to use the suggestion, or tap it on a phone. The spell check counts the words on this list as spelled right.

Press Enter to add. A comma stays part of the phrase. To add several at once, paste a list with one on each line, or press Shift+Enter between them. Suggestions start after you type 2 letters. Tip: select a word in your text before opening this window and it is ready to add.

No words yet. Add the names, programs, and phrases you type most.

        Ignored words

The spell check doesn't mark these words. A word goes on this list when you choose Always ignore in the spell check, or when you add it here. Delete a word to have it marked again.

Separate several words with spaces. Capitals don't matter: lasix also covers Lasix.

          Templates

Save text you start notes with, like a visit note outline, and put it in the text box with one click. It goes where your cursor is, or fills the box when it is empty. The first 3 on this list also have a button under the text box.

No templates yet. Type or paste an outline in the text box, then press + New template to save it.

How to turn a list into one line

            1. Paste the list into the box above, one item per line. It can come from a PDF, an email, the problem list in your EHR, or a column of cells copied from Excel or Google Sheets.
            2. Press Join with commas. To change only some of the lines, select them first.
            3. Press Copy all and paste the line into your note.

What gets cleaned up along the way

Lists copied out of documents rarely arrive clean. Join with commas deals with the usual clutter, so you don't have to strip it first.

Numbers inside an item are left alone. “Metformin 500 mg twice daily” stays exactly as written.

A comma list or a sentence?

Use Join with commas for problem lists, medication lists, and anywhere a plain list reads fine. Use Join with “and” when the list goes inside a sentence, such as “Client has a history of CHF, HTN, and CAD.” It adds “and” before the last item with a comma in front of it (the serial, or Oxford, comma), which stops the last two items reading as a pair. Two items become “CHF and HTN” with no comma.

            Before
            CHF
            HTN
            CAD
            After: Join with “and”
            CHF, HTN, and CAD

            Going the other way

One item per line splits a comma-separated list back onto separate lines. It also splits at semicolons, drops the “and” before the last item, and leaves numbers like 1,000 in one piece.

            Before
            CHF, HTN, and CAD
            After: One item per line
            CHF
            HTN
            CAD

When it is not the right button

If your items have commas of their own, like “Lisinopril 10 mg, once daily,” a comma-joined line is hard to read because nobody can tell where one item ends. Keep those on separate lines, or edit them by hand.

If the lines are one paragraph that a PDF broke apart, you want Remove line breaks instead. It joins lines with spaces, not commas.

            Questions

Can I join only some of the lines?

Yes. Select those lines, then press Join with commas. The rest of your text stays as it is.

Is there a space after each comma?

Yes. Items are joined with a comma and one space, the way they would be written in a sentence. There is no comma after the last item.

How do I paste a column from Excel?

Select the cells in the column and copy them. Each cell pastes onto its own line, so Join with commas turns the whole column into one line.

Can I use semicolons or another separator?

Not at the moment. WriteKeys joins with commas, or with commas and “and”. If you need a different separator often, email hello@writekeys.net and tell us what you use it for.
